MATTHEW 5:3 Blessed are the poor in spirit for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
What does it mean to be “poor in spirit”?
Before I looked this up, I thought it to be unworthy before God. They knew they were and accepted Jesus. The “Bible Knowledge Commentary, New Testament, Page 29. says, The Poor in spirit are those who consciously depend on God, not themselves; they are “inwardly,” having no ability in themselves to please God (cf. Rom. 3:9-12). Those who mourn ( Matt. 5:4) recognize their needs and present them to One who is able to assist.”
Those two verses become even more beautiful.
